What placements actually test

Campus and off-campus placements filter freshers through the same four gates: an aptitude test, a coding/DSA round, one or more technical interviews, and an HR round. Product companies add system design and deeper DSA; service companies weight aptitude and communication more heavily. Knowing the gates lets you prepare deliberately instead of randomly.

• Aptitude — quantitative, logical reasoning, verbal (the most common first filter)
• Coding / DSA — interview patterns, not memorised solutions
• Technical interview — DSA, core CS (OS, DBMS, CN, OOP), and your projects
• HR / communication — clarity, confidence, and 'tell me about yourself'

A realistic month-by-month plan

If you have 4–6 months before placements, here is a sane order of attack. Adjust the pace to your timeline, but keep the sequence.

1. Months 1–2: Aptitude fundamentals (quant, logic, verbal) + start DSA fundamentals (complexity, arrays, strings, hashing).
2. Months 2–4: DSA patterns in depth (two pointers, sliding window, binary search, trees, graphs, DP) + build 1–2 solid projects.
3. Month 4–5: Core CS subjects (OS, DBMS, CN, OOP) + polish an ATS-friendly resume.
4. Month 5–6: Mock interviews, company-specific patterns, HR practice, and consistent applications.

Coding & DSA — the biggest filter

Don't grind 500 random problems. Master the ~16 interview patterns behind them — two pointers, sliding window, binary search, BFS/DFS, dynamic programming and the rest. Pattern mastery lets you solve unseen problems, which is exactly what interviews test.

Aptitude — clear round one

Most freshers who get rejected never even reach the interview — they fall at the aptitude test. Practise quantitative, logical reasoning and verbal under time pressure until speed becomes automatic.

Projects that impress

Two or three real, deployed projects beat ten half-finished tutorials. Pick projects relevant to your target role, put them on GitHub with a clean README, and be ready to explain every decision. See engineering project ideas.

How many months does placement preparation take?

A focused 4–6 months is realistic for a fresher — covering aptitude, DSA patterns, core CS, projects and interview practice. Consistency matters far more than intensity.

Aptitude or DSA first?

Start both early, but aptitude is the more common first filter, so don't neglect it. DSA needs the most time overall, so build it steadily across all months.

What if I'm from a non-CS branch?

You can still crack software placements — focus on DSA patterns, one strong language, projects and aptitude. Many hired freshers are from non-CS branches.
